🤔What Regulations cover Emergency Lighting Systems?
🏢The Workplace (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regulations 1992 covers a wide range of basic health, safety and welfare issues, and apply to most workplaces.
In addition to this, other UK legislation requiring the maintenance and testing of emergency lightning systems includes;
📜Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
📜Regulation Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
📜Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996: Statutory Instrument No.341
🤔What are the frequencies of testing EML installations?
BS 5266: -12025 & BS EN 50172:2024 recommend that the following frequencies are adopted:
📅Monthly – Functional operation should be checked at least every month.
📅Annually – Each luminaire should be subjected to a full rated duration discharge test and visual inspection at least once every year.
📅Minimum every 5 years – photometric verification should be carried out to confirm the emergency lighting installation continues to achieve the required performance.
📖Don’t forget the Emergency Lighting Logbook! This is also a requirement of BS 5266-1:2025 & BS EN 50172:2024 and forms an important form of the installation!
