Today’s Tech Tuesday takes us back to basics as we look at the importance of regulations. The What, Why and Who.
If you work with electricity, you need to know about the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and the IET Wiring Regulations BS 7671.
These are two sets of regulations that aim to ensure the safety of electrical installations and equipment in the workplace.
BS 7671 and the IET Wiring Regulations have been extensively referred to in HSE over the years. Installations which conform to the standards laid down in BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 are regarded by HSE as likely to achieve conformity with the relevant parts of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
🤔What are the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989?
The Electricity at Work Regulations is a set of regulations made under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.
🤔What is The IET Wiring Regulations BS 7671:2018+A4:2026?
They’re a set of regulations that provide standards for electrical installations in the UK. It was created to ensure that electrical installations are safe and meet the requirements of the EaWR1989. It covers all aspects of electrical installations, including design, installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance.
🤔So why are they important?
The purpose of the Regulations is to require precautions to be taken against the risk of death or personal injury from electricity in work activities. The guidance is intended to assist dutyholders in meeting the requirements of the Regulations, giving technical and legal guidance.
The purpose of the Memorandum is to amplify the nature of the precautions in general terms so as to help in the achievement of high standards of electrical safety in compliance with the duties imposed.
🤔Who needs to know the regulations?
The Regulations impose duties on people, whether they’re employers, facilities managers, dutyholders, contractors, maintenance teams, electricians.
You will always refer to the regulations to ensure the safety of people, places and systems. When those who design, construct, operate or maintain electrical installations and equipment need advice they should refer to appropriate guidance.
