🧑🏻🦲As a Dutyholder, it is your responsibility to ensure complete compliance in the workplace, making sure electrical installations are inspected and tested at appropriate intervals to establish their current condition. This is known as periodic inspection and testing.
🗝️Why does frequency of testing matter?
By carrying out frequent electrical inspection and testing, Dutyholders are showing due diligence, maintaining safe systems, safe places, safe people as well as meeting legal compliance within your workplace.
If you comply with the guidance given you have an excellent defence in the event something goes wrong.
📜Regulations 4(1) and 4(2) state the requirement to ensure that an electrical installation should be designed, installed, operated and maintained in a safe manner at all times, the Guidance notes tell us how this can be demonstrated.
🤔 So how often should I inspect and test?
EaWR leaves that to the judgement of the Dutyholder, however Guidance Note 3 to BS7671 gives a more definite answer.
💡To meet these regulations, the IET recommend that Hospital, Commercial and Education sites undergo inspection and testing every 5 years and Industrial sites every 3 years.
This means that programmed work could be either 100%, 33% or 20% testing each year, depending on the Dutyholders preference and evidence from previous test records.
